As far as I know, Jewish traditions (and other middle eastern cultural traditions) kept very detailed records of genealogy, which is why the Gospel of Matthew begins with a long list of Jesus’s ancestors. Even for the poor, every Jewish person would have known what tribe of Israel they belonged to, both because of oral history and other records of genealogy.
